Play Praise Breaks with Little Practice

I remember thinking that learning to play like “that” would never happen for me. I’m not sure where I got the notion that I would forever be an “ok” piano player and learning the fancy stuff would always be out of my reach.

I was a Music Director for 17 years. I went to my first church my junior year of college. I remember my first week of practices and services, thinking “I have no idea what I’m doing!” Before long, my time was spend in creating band job descriptions, choosing songs for services, scheduling songs, finding new songs, finding  or writing chord charts, scheduling teams for services, and communicating with people on my team. By thee time that was all done, I didn’t have the time or energy to devote to practicing. I was playing what I had known for years.

It wasn’t until the last 6 years that I realized how much I had neglected my own practice time and how it was affecting my playing confidence. That’s when I decided I needed to find realistic ways to get better.

One of my biggest takeaways is that learning 1 small thing in every key and learning to play it in every song you know is the best way for busy women to really change the way they play!

Now instead of feeling defeated, I squeeze in 5, 10 or 15 minutes and leave inspired and energized about my progress.
